Condo Living in Knoxville Is Finding a New Audience. I'm Part of It.

I always had a pretty clear picture of the home I thought I would buy. Then I fell in love with a condo.

Yes, we're talking about homes.

Like many people, I had associated condo living with empty nesters or retirees looking to simplify. I hadn’t given much thought to how well it could fit someone in their twenties. But when I considered what I actually wanted from a home, it made a lot of sense.

A home that fits my life

As a young adult living on my own, I don’t need endless square footage to clean or a big yard to mow. I wanted a place that felt like mine, with enough space to enjoy and fewer responsibilities competing for my time.

I also appreciate having neighbors nearby. There’s comfort in familiar faces and in knowing we can look out for one another. For me, that sense of community has been one of the best parts.

And it feels like home. I often forget I even share a wall with a neighbor. There’s room for my personality, my belongings, and the everyday routines that make a space my own.

Why it deserves a second look

I think those same priorities resonate with other buyers in their twenties and early thirties. Whether you’re buying alone, with a partner, or starting a small family, more space doesn’t always mean a better fit. Sometimes, a manageable home gives you more freedom to enjoy everything outside of it.

Affordability can be part of the appeal, too. Depending on the community and location, a condo may offer a lower purchase price than a detached home. The important thing is to look at the full monthly cost, including HOA dues, and understand what those dues cover. Maintenance responsibilities vary, so knowing what’s yours to handle matters just as much as knowing what’s included.

Room for the future

A condo can also be a first step toward longer term goals. If life eventually takes you to another home, keeping it as a rental may be a wonderful option for you, provided the community’s rules allow it and the numbers make sense. Rental income comes with expenses and responsibilities, but it’s a possibility worth considering when you buy.

For me, condo living was an unexpected fit. It gave me a place to make my own without taking on more than I wanted to manage at this stage of life.
